Questions

What's the difference between a work order and an invoice?

A work order says what work is to be done and records what was done. An invoice asks for payment. Many businesses finish the work order first, then copy its lines onto the invoice.

Who fills in a work order?

Usually the business doing the work, after talking to the customer. Landlords and property managers also write them to ask a mechanic to come out.

Should a work order show prices?

It can. For a fixed-price job, list the agreed price. For time and materials, leave the rates and fill in labor and parts when the work is done.

Do I need the customer's approval before starting repairs?

Many states require a written estimate and the customer's approval before repair work, and again if the price goes up. Check your state's rules. The approval line on this form is for that signature.
